2. Flip It Before You Wash It
Before tossing clothes into the machine, turn them inside out. This simple step protects the outer surface of the fabric from the friction of the wash cycle. It prevents "pilling" (those tiny fuzz balls) and ensures the colors stay rich for longer.
3. Choose "Gentle" over "Powerful"
Kids' clothes go through a lot, but your washing machine doesn't have to be aggressive.
* The Cycle: Use the "Delicate" or "Hand Wash" setting.
* The Detergent: Opt for a mild, eco-friendly, or baby-safe detergent. Harsh chemicals can break down cotton fibers over time and can irritate sensitive skin.
4. Skip the Fabric Softeners
It sounds counterintuitive, but fabric softeners can actually coat cotton fibers, reducing their natural breathability. 5. The Art of Drying
If you have the time, air-drying in the shade is the gold standard. Direct sunlight can bleach colors, but a shaded, breezy spot is perfect.
* If you use a dryer: Set it to the lowest heat possible and remove the clothes while they are still a tiny bit damp. Over-drying is what leads to that "crunchy" feeling.
6. Treat Stains Like a Pro
From berry smoothies to paint, stains happen! The secret is to act fast.
* Blot the stain with cold water immediately (never rub, as that pushes the stain deeper into the cotton).
* For tough spots, a paste of baking soda and water works wonders without damaging the fabric.
